China’s national lawmakers have begun deliberating a significant work report from the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), highlighting a substantial increase in efforts to combat telecom fraud crimes. On Saturday, Procurator-General Ying Yong presented the report at the second plenary meeting of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress.
According to the report, China prosecuted 78,000 individuals for telecom fraud in 2024, marking an impressive 53.9 percent increase from the previous year. This surge reflects the intensified crackdown on such crimes, which have been a growing concern due to their cross-border nature and impact on residents.
The SPP has collaborated closely with the top court and police authorities to develop guidelines for handling cross-border telecom fraud cases. This joint effort aims to streamline legal processes and enhance cooperation between different branches of law enforcement.
One notable case mentioned in the report involved the top procuratorate providing guidance to prosecutors in Zhejiang Province on dealing with a group of 39 members of Myanmar-based criminal organizations targeting Chinese nationals. This case exemplifies the challenges posed by international criminal networks and the steps being taken to address them.
The increased prosecution numbers and collaborative measures underscore China’s commitment to protecting its people from telecom fraud and ensuring justice is served.
