China’s Top Legislature Maps Out Future at Plenary Meeting

China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislative body, held a significant meeting on Saturday to review the past year’s achievements and set goals for the future.

President Xi Jinping joined other senior leaders at the second plenary meeting of the NPC’s annual session. The gathering focused on strengthening China’s legal framework and ensuring justice for its people.

Reviewing Achievements

Zhao Leji, the chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presented the legislature’s work report. He highlighted that in 2024, the NPC made strides in upholding the Constitution and strengthening its authority. The legislature reviewed 39 legislative items and adopted 24, including new and revised laws aimed at enhancing China’s socialist legal system.

The NPC also exercised oversight by reviewing reports from various state bodies, ensuring accountability and transparency in governance. Efforts were made to support deputies—representatives of the people—in performing their duties and staying connected with the citizens.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Zhao outlined plans for 2025, emphasizing the NPC’s commitment to legal reforms and promoting the rule of law throughout the country.

Justice and People’s Well-being

Zhang Jun, President of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), reported that courts across China accepted over 46 million cases and concluded over 45 million in 2024. He emphasized the role of the judiciary in safeguarding national security, promoting development, and ensuring the well-being of the people through strict and impartial justice.

Looking forward, Zhang stated that courts will continue to contribute to building a society governed by the rule of law.

Advancing Peace and Rejuvenation

Ying Yong, Procurator-General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), discussed the work of the nation’s prosecutors. Over the past year, procuratorates advanced initiatives to promote peace and improve people’s livelihoods. In 2025, they aim to deepen reforms and contribute to China’s progress and rejuvenation.
