Laos’ newly appointed Foreign Minister, Thongsavanh Phomvihane, is set to make his first official visit to China from March 12 to 15, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.
At the invitation of Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and minister of foreign affairs, Thongsavanh Phomvihane’s visit marks the first by a foreign minister to China following the country’s recent “Two Sessions” meetings.
The visit highlights the importance both nations place on strengthening China-Laos relations. During his stay, Thongsavanh Phomvihane will hold talks with Wang Yi to discuss the implementation of agreements made by their top leaders and to enhance bilateral and multilateral strategic cooperation.
China has been a key partner for Laos, serving as its largest source of foreign investment and exports. The China-Laos Railway, a significant project connecting the two countries, has seen a continuous increase in passenger and freight volumes. The railway now facilitates cross-border freight transportation to 19 countries and regions, becoming a vital “golden channel” for the Indo-China Peninsula.
This visit aims to deepen the China-Laos community with a shared future, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both nations. It also seeks to contribute positively to regional and global peace, stability, and development.
