Traditional Qingming Rice Cakes Get a Colorful Twist

Artisans in Zhejiang Give Qingming Rice Cakes a Vibrant Twist

In the heart of Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, artisans are breathing new life into traditional Qingming rice cakes. These handmade treats, a staple during the Qingming Festival, are being reimagined with vibrant designs that capture the essence of spring.

Made from glutinous rice flour mixed with Chinese mugwort—a plant known for its aromatic and medicinal properties—the rice cakes are transformed into edible works of art. Delicate flower-shaped decorations adorn each cake, reflecting the blooming landscapes that characterize the season.

“We wanted to blend tradition with creativity,” said one artisan at the workshop. “By incorporating colorful designs, we’re bringing a fresh appeal to the rice cakes, especially for the younger generation.”

The Qingming Festival, falling on April 4 this year, is a time for honoring ancestors and enjoying the beauty of nature. These reinvented rice cakes offer a delicious way to celebrate both heritage and the arrival of spring.
