China’s state-of-the-art icebreaker, the Xuelong-2, also known as Snow Dragon-2, opened its decks to the public on Tuesday at Lyttelton Harbor in Christchurch, New Zealand. The vessel welcomed around 600 visitors, including local officials and enthusiastic members of the public.
The Xuelong-2 is currently on China’s 41st Antarctic expedition and made its second stop in Christchurch on this journey. The open day offered a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the advanced research ship and learn about its crucial role in polar exploration.
During the visit, Chinese and New Zealand Antarctic researchers held an academic seminar aboard the vessel. They engaged in insightful discussions on polar marine biology, chemistry, and geology, strengthening scientific collaboration between the two countries.
Before setting sail again, the Xuelong-2 conducted personnel rotations and restocked essential supplies. The icebreaker is now continuing its mission to the Ross Sea, where it will carry out comprehensive oceanic surveys.
The visit not only enhanced public interest in polar research but also fostered closer ties between China and New Zealand in the field of scientific exploration. The Xuelong-2’s ongoing expedition underscores the global importance of understanding and preserving our planet’s polar regions.
