Chinese Premier Emphasizes Need to Safeguard Farm Produce Supply

China’s Premier Li Qiang Calls for More Grain to Feed 1.4 Billion People

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has emphasized the critical need to stabilize the supply of grains and key agricultural products to ensure food security for the nation’s 1.4 billion people. Speaking on the importance of spring agriculture, Li urged all regions and departments to prioritize rural development and shoulder their responsibilities in boosting grain production.

“We must lay a solid foundation to achieve our annual output target,” Li said in his instruction on spring agricultural production. He highlighted the necessity of stabilizing grain and oil crop planting areas and accelerating the adoption of advanced agricultural machinery and technology.

Li also stressed the importance of rural revitalization, calling for improved support systems to strengthen agriculture, benefit farmers, and enrich rural areas. He urged continued efforts to build on the country’s achievements in poverty alleviation.

A national conference on spring agricultural production was held on Thursday in Suqian, Jiangsu Province. Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong attended the conference, emphasizing the need for solid preparations for spring plowing.

“We should improve arable land quality by cultivating high-standard farmland and encourage various entities to increase their per unit crop yields,” Liu said. He also called for enhanced monitoring and emergency response to natural disasters, better regulation of the grain market, support for beef and dairy cattle farming, and measures to increase farmers’ incomes.

Agriculture, rural areas, and farmers remain top priorities for China’s economic and social development. The country aims to achieve a grain output of around 700 million tonnes by 2025 to feed its vast population.
