Top diplomats from China, Japan, and South Korea have pledged to deepen their trilateral cooperation in economic, technological, and cultural fields. Meeting in Tokyo on Saturday, they emphasized the importance of working together to benefit their nations and the broader East Asian region.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul attended the 11th China-Japan-ROK Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Wang Yi highlighted that cooperation among the three countries has yielded positive results over the past two decades, promoting regional stability and economic integration.
“The more solid China-Japan-ROK cooperation is, the stronger our ability to withstand risks and promote mutual understanding and friendship,” Wang Yi said.
The ministers agreed to focus on several key areas:
- Economic and Trade Cooperation: Resuming negotiations on a trilateral Free Trade Agreement to boost mutual trade and investment, and maintaining stable industrial and supply chains.
- Scientific and Technological Innovation: Establishing a dialogue mechanism on digital economy cooperation and sharing innovation opportunities to drive high-quality development.
- People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges: Aiming to increase exchanges among the three countries to 40 million people by 2030, and promoting cultural initiatives like the “Culture City of East Asia.”
- Addressing Common Challenges: Collaborating on sustainable development, environmental protection, disaster management, and non-traditional security challenges.
Amid global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, the ministers stressed the importance of upholding open economies and free trade. They expressed support for fostering an inclusive and non-discriminatory international economic environment.
The meeting also laid the groundwork for the upcoming 10th China-Japan-ROK Trilateral Summit. The diplomats agreed to continue enhancing practical cooperation, exploring new areas of collaboration, and striving for outcomes that benefit their peoples and the region.
