China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng has called on the United States to avoid turning trade into a weapon during his meeting with U.S. Senator Steve Daines in Beijing on Saturday.
He Lifeng emphasized China’s firm opposition to the politicization and weaponization of economic and trade issues. He expressed China’s willingness to engage in open dialogue with the U.S. based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.
“There are extensive common interests and vast potential for cooperation between our two countries,” He said. “China and the United States can become partners and friends, achieving shared prosperity that benefits both nations and the world.”
Senator Daines, a Republican from Montana, acknowledged the significance of U.S.-China relations and stressed the need for enhanced dialogue. “I’m committed to contributing tangible efforts to strengthen our relationship,” he stated.
Daines arrived in Beijing on Thursday and also met with Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu on Friday. They held in-depth discussions on China-U.S. relations and issues of mutual concern, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
During a press briefing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning welcomed visits from individuals across all sectors of the United States, including members of Congress. “China consistently believes that stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations serves the common interests of our peoples and meets the expectations of the international community,” Mao said.
