China’s Ice and Snow Tourism Soars to New Heights in 2024

China’s ice and snow tourism industry is reaching new heights in 2024, captivating millions of visitors with its breathtaking winter attractions. Leading the surge is Harbin, the capital of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, recently named the country’s top ice and snow tourism destination by the China Tourism Academy.

One of Harbin’s most dazzling landmarks, the world-renowned Harbin Ice-Snow World, welcomed an impressive 3.56 million tourist visits during its 68-day operation since December 21, 2024. Visitors marveled at the stunning ice sculptures and enjoyed a variety of winter activities that showcased the city’s rich cultural heritage and artistic flair.

According to data from the China Tourism Academy, the 2023–2024 ice and snow season saw China’s ice and snow activities attract a staggering 430 million tourist visits. This surge in interest generated a total tourism revenue of 524.7 billion yuan (approximately $72.39 billion), underscoring the significant economic impact of the industry.

Between 2018 and 2024, China’s total investment in the ice and snow tourism industry amounted to 1.3157 trillion yuan (about $181.51 billion). This substantial investment reflects the country’s commitment to developing its winter tourism sector and offering unique experiences to both domestic and international travelers.

The growing popularity of ice and snow tourism in China not only boosts the economy but also promotes cultural exchange and environmental appreciation among youth and young adults worldwide. With its enchanting winter landscapes and dynamic festivals, China continues to be a must-visit destination for those seeking unforgettable winter adventures.
