China and Portugal Strengthen Ties in High-Level Beijing Talks

Beijing, China — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel on Tuesday for the second China-Portugal strategic dialogue at the foreign ministers’ level. The meeting, held in Beijing, aimed to enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the longstanding tradition of mutual respect and support between China and Portugal. He praised the effective resolution of the Macao issue, noting it as a model example of addressing historical matters through friendly consultation.

“China is ready to work with Portugal to build a more stable, fruitful, and dynamic bilateral relationship,” Wang Yi stated, emphasizing the significance of this year, which marks the 20th anniversary of the China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). He expressed hope for China and Europe to become strategic partners of mutual trust and achievement.

Wang Yi also discussed the opportunities presented by China’s modernization efforts. “Chinese modernization is one of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, which will provide greater opportunities for Portugal and other countries in the world,” he said. He encouraged both nations to expand cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, and to leverage Macao’s role as a bridge in their relations.

Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel expressed his satisfaction with the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” practice in Macao. He reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to the one-China policy and emphasized the importance of Portugal-China relations. “Chinese investment has played an important role in Portugal’s economic and social development,” Rangel noted, welcoming more Chinese enterprises to invest in Portugal and expressing willingness to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including economy, trade, energy, health, finance, infrastructure, and green transformation.

Rangel’s five-day visit to China, concluding on Friday, reflects the ongoing efforts by both nations to deepen their strategic partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration.
