Beijing, China — The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged the Philippines to avoid serving as a “mouthpiece” for other nations amid rising tensions over military cooperation between Manila and Washington.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that defense and security collaborations between the Philippines and other countries should not target any third party or harm their interests. “Facts have repeatedly proven that nothing good could come out of opening the door to a predator,” Guo said. “Those who willingly serve as chess pieces will be deserted in the end.”
“Our message to some in the Philippines: stop serving as other countries’ mouthpiece and no more stunts for personal political agendas,” Guo added.
Guo’s remarks came in response to reports about Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez discussing U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s scheduled visit to the Philippines later this week.
The Philippines and the United States have been strengthening their defense ties amid regional security concerns. However, China has consistently cautioned against such alliances, expressing worries that they may destabilize the region.
Guo reiterated that cooperation should contribute to regional peace and stability rather than escalate tensions. “We hope the relevant parties will act with caution and do more to enhance mutual trust in the region,” he said.
