Chinas Upgraded Jiaolong Submersible Breaks Deep sea Mission Records

China’s Upgraded Jiaolong Submersible Sets New Deep-Sea Diving Records

China’s manned deep-sea submersible, Jiaolong, has reached new milestones following a significant technological upgrade. Between February 27 and March 25, Jiaolong completed its first sea trials, setting records in diving frequency and efficiency.

During a ten-day operational period, Jiaolong executed 14 dives, including an unprecedented four “two-dives-per-day” missions and nine consecutive operations with one pilot and two scientists. This achievement was announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The recent upgrade, initiated in November last year, focused on critical components like the propulsion system and battery packs, which are now domestically produced. The enhancements include 7000-meter-rated oil-immersed lithium batteries with higher energy density, low-noise direct-drive direct current thrusters for improved propulsion efficiency, a deep-sea hydraulic buoyancy control system, and expanded emergency hydraulic interfaces.

Trials conducted at a depth of 3,000 meters confirmed the reliability of these advancements, marking significant progress in Jiaolong‘s energy efficiency and the localization of core technologies.

Looking ahead, Jiaolong is scheduled to undertake over 80 dives in 2025, according to the ministry.
