Wednesday saw sharp criticism from the Chinese mainland as spokesperson Chen Binhua accused Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of jeopardizing the future of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Chen likened TSMC to “a piece of meat on the chopping block,” suggesting that the DPP is sacrificing the company to curry favor with the United States.
Reports have surfaced that U.S. President Donald Trump asked TSMC to boost its investment in the United States to $200 billion, doubling its earlier commitment of $100 billion made in March. This development has sparked concerns among residents of Taiwan about the company’s increasing shift of manufacturing and high-end research and development to the U.S.
Chen criticized the DPP for neglecting the interests of Taiwan’s industrial sector and people. “The DPP only cares about its own selfish agenda and does not consider the well-being of Taiwan compatriots,” he stated during a press conference.
He warned that the DPP’s actions, aimed at seeking external support for their “Taiwan independence” agenda, could lead to significant job losses and hinder future opportunities for Taiwan’s industries and residents. “They are going further down the road of ‘selling Taiwan’ and ‘destroying Taiwan,'” Chen added.
Addressing concerns about Lai Ching-te of the DPP, Chen referred to him as “a pro on selling Taiwan,” emphasizing that the worries of Taiwan’s residents regarding Lai’s use of power are not unfounded.
The situation highlights growing tensions as Taiwan’s key industries face pressure amid geopolitical shifts. The future of TSMC, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, remains uncertain as debates over national interests and economic strategies continue.
