China is speeding up the creation of a modern ecological and environmental monitoring system, a government official announced on Wednesday. According to Jiang Huohua, who heads the ecological and environmental monitoring department at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, establishing a comprehensive network that covers the skies, land, and seas is essential to this effort.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite remote-sensing technologies are poised to play major roles in this initiative. Jiang highlighted how advanced AI applications like DeepSeek are already making a difference in environmental monitoring.
To support this technological push, the ministry has introduced policies encouraging the development of environmental protection robots and remote-operation equipment. These innovations aim to enhance the application of new technologies in monitoring and protecting the environment.
Remote-sensing techniques using satellites and drones are expected to be increasingly significant. The ministry plans to boost the country’s satellite remote-sensing capabilities, taking advantage of the unique benefits of these technologies and integrating them with large AI models, Jiang added.
