In a move to strengthen international ties, China and Nauru have announced plans to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, sports, marine development, climate change response, and capacity building. The announcement came after a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Nauruan Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Lionel Aingimea in Beijing on Wednesday.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the progress made since the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two nations. “Both sides have fostered mutual understanding and support. Our pragmatic cooperation has developed comprehensively, bringing tangible benefits to the people of Nauru,” Wang said.
The meeting coincided with the opening ceremony of the Nauru Embassy in China, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. China has expressed its willingness to assist in the operation of the new embassy. “We congratulate Nauru on the official opening of its embassy in China and are willing to provide conveniences and assistance,” Wang added.
Lionel Aingimea thanked China for its valuable assistance in infrastructure construction and socio-economic development, highlighting the positive impact on the livelihoods of the Nauruan people. “We sincerely appreciate China’s support, which helps improve our people’s livelihood and promotes sustainable development,” Aingimea said.
Nauru reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to expand cooperation in various fields. “We will not waver in our stance of adhering to the one-China principle. We look forward to pushing our bilateral relations to a new level,” Aingimea emphasized.
The strengthened partnership between China and Nauru signals a shared commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change and promoting sustainable development.
