Heron Flock in Chengdu Draws Attention with Unique Feeding Behavior

Chengdu’s Grey Herons Captivate Locals with ‘Flowing Banquet’ Feeding Style

April 1 marks International Bird Day, and residents of Chengdu City in southwest China are flocking to the Jinjiang River to witness a mesmerizing sight. A group of grey herons has captured public attention with their unique feeding behavior, humorously dubbed by locals as ‘lining up for a flowing banquet.’

The birds stand motionless in the shallow waters for extended periods, their gaze fixed on the water below. Suddenly, they strike with lightning speed to catch unsuspecting fish. This hunting technique not only showcases their patience but also their incredible precision.

According to the Chengdu Birdwatching Society, this strategic stance allows the herons to expand their hunting range and increase their chances of a successful catch. Experts believe that the herons’ increased activity is a direct result of successful ecological restoration efforts along the Jinjiang River.

‘Improved water quality and a rising fish population have turned the river into a thriving habitat for herons, egrets, and other bird species,’ an expert explained. ‘It’s a beautiful example of how urban life and nature can harmoniously coexist.’

The presence of these majestic birds has not only brought joy to local residents but also raised awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. As the city celebrates International Bird Day, the grey herons of Chengdu stand as a symbol of hope and the positive impact of ecological efforts.
