Wang Yi Lavrov Vow to Strengthen Ties in Moscow Talks

China and Russia Pledge Closer Cooperation in High-Level Meeting

In a significant move to strengthen their bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday. The two leaders emphasized their commitment to enhancing cooperation across various fields, signaling a deepening partnership between China and Russia.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is on a three-day official visit to Russia. During the meeting, he highlighted the historical significance of this year, marking the 80th anniversary of victories in both the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

“The Chinese and Russian peoples stood together to defeat Japanese militarism and German fascism, defending human conscience and achieving world peace at great cost,” Wang said. “China is ready to work with Russia to shoulder our special responsibility as permanent members of the UN Security Council, remove interference, and safeguard international fairness and justice.”

Lavrov praised the unprecedented high level of Russia-China relations, noting the long-standing tradition of good-neighborliness and friendship between the two nations. “Russia is willing to work with China to push for new achievements in our bilateral relations,” he stated.

The ministers discussed their mutual desire to inject stability into the complex international landscape. “As we commemorate the 80th anniversaries of significant historical events, Russia and China should work closely to promote a just and reasonable international order,” Lavrov added.

Addressing global initiatives, Lavrov expressed Russia’s appreciation for China’s proposals and affirmed support for China’s position on the Taiwan question. Both sides agreed on the importance of preventing the resurgence of Nazism and militarism.

The discussions also covered the Ukraine crisis. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s focus on addressing the root causes of the conflict and building a lasting Eurasian security architecture. Wang reiterated China’s consistent stance, expressing support for efforts conducive to peace and a willingness to play a constructive role in promoting a political settlement through platforms like the “Friends of Peace.”

The two leaders agreed to strengthen coordination between their foreign ministries, ensure the success of the China-Russia Cultural Year, and enrich cultural exchanges to enhance friendship between their peoples. They also plan to boost cooperation within frameworks like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, G20, and the United Nations to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of countries in the Global South.
