China has urged all parties in Myanmar to ensure the safety of earthquake relief workers and the smooth delivery of aid supplies following a devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the country last Friday.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted that relief supplies from the Red Cross Society of China have arrived in Myanmar and are en route to the hard-hit region of Mandalay.
“At present, relief workers and supplies are safe,” Guo confirmed. “The top priority now is to provide disaster relief. We hope all parties in Myanmar will collaborate to overcome these difficulties and ensure unimpeded rescue transportation channels.”
Guo added that China is willing to offer assistance and support to the affected areas to the best of its ability, based on Myanmar’s needs.
The earthquake has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with the death toll rising to 2,886 people. Additionally, 4,639 individuals have been injured, and 373 remain missing, according to information from Myanmar’s State Administration Council released on Wednesday.
In a gesture of solidarity, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar has provided cash assistance worth 1.5 million yuan (approximately $206,700) to the Myanmar Red Cross Society to aid in relief efforts.
