China Responds Strongly to U.S. Tariff Announcement
China has firmly opposed the United States’ recent decision to impose new tariffs on its trading partners, including a significant 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods. The announcement was met with strong words from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, who stated that China will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests.
Speaking at a regular press conference on Thursday, Guo emphasized that “there is no winner in trade and tariff wars” and that protectionism is not the answer. He criticized the U.S. actions as a serious violation of World Trade Organization rules and a move that undermines the multilateral trading system.
“Under the guise of ‘reciprocity,’ the U.S. has imposed tariffs on products exported by many countries, including China,” Guo said. “This approach not only damages global trade but also harms the interests of consumers and businesses worldwide.”
Guo urged the United States to rectify its practices and resolve trade differences through equal and respectful consultations. “We call on the U.S. to engage in dialogue with countries around the world, including China, in a mutually beneficial manner,” he added.
The escalating trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies have raised concerns about global economic stability. Experts fear that an ongoing tariff war could disrupt supply chains and slow down international trade.
Young people in the Global South are watching these developments closely, as the outcomes could impact job markets, technology access, and economic opportunities in their regions.
