By weaving Armenian folk tunes with Chinese melodies, violinist Astrid Poghosyan, also known as Ma Xingxing, is connecting two civilizations through the universal language of music.
Astrid’s journey began in the ancient streets of Yerevan, Armenia, where she first fell in love with the violin. Her passion for music led her to Shanghai, where the rhythms of the Huangpu River inspired her to blend her heritage with Chinese culture.
“Music transcends borders,” Astrid says. “Through my violin, I want to build bridges between Armenia and China, sharing the rich traditions of both cultures with the world.”
Her dedication to cultural exchange has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, Astrid was honored with the Shanghai Magnolia Memorial Award, recognizing her significant contributions to the city’s cultural landscape.
Astrid’s story is featured in the upcoming documentary “Foreigners but not Outsiders,” airing on April 6, which marks the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of China-Armenia diplomatic relations. The documentary showcases how foreign residents like Astrid have become integral parts of Chinese society, fostering understanding and collaboration.
Through her music, Astrid Poghosyan continues to inspire young people across the globe, showing that art has the power to unite us all.
