Beijing — China announced on Friday that it has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) challenging the United States’ recent imposition of “reciprocal tariffs” on its trading partners.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the U.S. tariffs are a serious violation of WTO rules and undermine the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members. “This unilateral action by the United States disrupts the rules-based multilateral trading system and threatens the stability of the global economic and trade order,” the ministry said in a statement.
Condemning the U.S. move as a “typical unilateral and hegemonic practice,” the ministry expressed China’s firm opposition. “China has always been a staunch defender of the international economic and trade order and a strong supporter of the multilateral trading system,” the statement added.
China urged the United States to “immediately correct its erroneous actions” and withdraw the unilateral tariff measures. The dispute escalates ongoing trade tensions between the two largest economies in the world.
