A recent poll conducted by CGTN has revealed a wave of global condemnation towards the United States’ plan to implement “reciprocal tariffs.” The survey, which engaged over 9,600 international respondents, indicates widespread concern that such unilateral actions could trigger retaliatory measures, potentially escalating into a global trade war.
The U.S. government announced on Thursday its intention to raise tariffs on all trading partners under the guise of addressing trade imbalances and reducing the trade deficit. However, a significant 81% of those surveyed believe these measures will fail to deliver the desired outcomes. Many point to the previous administration’s tariff policies, which, according to the American Action Forum, cost U.S. consumers approximately $57 billion annually during President Trump’s first term.
Notably, 82% of respondents expressed the view that “reciprocal tariffs” could harm U.S. consumers and hinder economic growth within the country. “The competitiveness of products varies across nations,” one respondent commented. “Imposing blanket tariffs disregards the mutual benefits achieved through fair trade.”
The survey also highlighted concerns about the impact on developing countries. A substantial 83% condemned the U.S. for what they perceive as “indiscriminate attacks” on nations, particularly those still developing, arguing that such actions undermine their right to grow and prosper. Additionally, 84% believe that these tariffs will exacerbate unfair trade practices with traditional allies and trading partners, damaging the U.S.’s international credibility.
As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the U.S.’s unilateral introduction of these tariffs has been criticized by nearly 80% of participants for violating WTO rules. Many fear that using “reciprocal tariffs” as a tool to promote trade protectionism will intensify global trade tensions and lead to economic fragmentation.
“These tariffs are not just numbers; they affect people’s livelihoods,” said another respondent. “We need collaborative solutions, not unilateral actions that could harm the global economy.”
The CGTN poll, available in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian, reflects a broad international perspective. Within 24 hours of release, thousands of netizens voiced their opinions, underscoring the global concern over the potential repercussions of the U.S.’s tariff plans.
