China Says US Tariffs Harm Developing Nations’ Right to Grow

The United States’ recent imposition of tariffs on trading partners is facing sharp criticism from the Chinese government. On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the unilateral ‘reciprocal tariffs’ by the U.S. deprive countries, especially those in the Global South, of their right to development.

"Under the guise of reciprocity, the United States is prioritizing its own interests at the expense of others," Lin said during a daily news briefing. "This approach exemplifies unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying."

The U.S. tariffs affect over 180 countries and regions worldwide, including several classified by the United Nations as least developed countries. Analysts warn that these steep tariffs could have severe impacts on vulnerable nations that rely heavily on exports.

Data from the World Trade Organization indicates that these policies may widen the wealth gap between nations. "The U.S. actions threaten the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," Lin added.

Lin emphasized that the U.S. differentiated tax rates violate the World Trade Organization’s principle of non-discrimination, undermining global economic stability and the recovery process. He asserted that this move damages the multilateral trading system and is bound to face widespread opposition.

"Openness and cooperation are the historical trend, and development is a universal right of all countries, not the privilege of a few," Lin said. He called on all nations to uphold principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, urging a united stance against unilateralism and protectionism.
