China Continues to Support Urban Renewal Projects in 2025

China’s Big Push for Urban Renewal in 2025: Mega Cities to Get a Makeover

The Chinese central government has announced a significant boost to urban renewal projects in 2025, aiming to address pressing public concerns and promote high-quality urban development. The Ministry of Finance released a statement on Tuesday outlining plans to focus on sustainable urban renewal, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the living conditions in major cities.

According to the statement, the government will explore new ways to establish a lasting mechanism for urban renewal. Key initiatives include tackling gaps in urban infrastructure and boosting the construction of consumption-oriented facilities. This ambitious plan is set to target large cities and metropolises, with no more than 20 cities selected for financial support.

Priority will be given to mega and super-large cities, as well as major cities along key river basins such as the Yellow River and the Pearl River. The central government has pledged fixed subsidies to these selected cities based on their regions. Each city in the eastern region could receive up to 800 million yuan (approximately $111 million), while cities in the central region may receive up to 1 billion yuan. Cities in the western region and municipalities directly under central government jurisdiction could see subsidies capped at 1.2 billion yuan.

Funds will be disbursed annually in line with the progress of the projects. Over the next three years, the selected cities are expected to use the subsidies to significantly improve urban underground pipelines and other essential infrastructure. The efficiency of domestic sewage collection and treatment is set to be enhanced, leading to substantial advancements in the living environments of old urban areas.

This initiative reflects China’s commitment to sustainable urban development and its focus on improving the quality of life for urban residents. By addressing critical infrastructure needs and promoting renewal projects, the government aims to drive growth and foster more livable cities across the nation.
