China’s Icebreaker Xuelong Returns Home After 41st Antarctic Expedition
China’s icebreaker Xuelong has docked back home after successfully completing the nation’s 41st Antarctic expedition. The journey was marked by groundbreaking achievements, including the construction of the Qinling research station and significant climate change studies.
Launching on November 1, 2024, the expedition mobilized 516 scientists across three vessels, embarking on a mission to deepen understanding of the Antarctic region. The cargo ship Yong Sheng returned earlier in January 2025 after delivering essential materials for the new research station.
Meanwhile, the icebreaker Xuelong 2 remains in the Ross Sea until June, participating in joint international research efforts. This collaboration highlights China’s commitment to global scientific partnerships and the advancement of climate change research.
The establishment of the Qinling research station marks a significant milestone in China’s polar exploration. It provides scientists with a strategic base to conduct long-term studies on climate patterns, ecosystems, and the Antarctic environment.
