Chinese Premier Li Qiang and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone conversation on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of maintaining free and open trade between China and the European Union (EU).
Premier Li highlighted that both China and the EU are strong advocates for economic globalization and trade liberalization. He called for enhanced communication and coordination to expand mutual openness, safeguard free trade and investment, and ensure the stability of global industrial and supply chains.
Li expressed concern over recent actions by the United States, citing indiscriminate tariffs imposed on various trade partners, including China and the EU. He characterized these actions as unilateralism and protectionism that disrupt international trade. Li affirmed China’s commitment to defending its sovereignty, security, and development interests, as well as upholding international trade rules.
Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Li expressed China’s willingness to enhance political mutual trust and practical cooperation with the European side. He called for resolving mutual concerns through dialogue and promoting the continuous development of China-EU relations. Li also proposed organizing a new round of high-level dialogues in strategic, economic, trade, green, and digital sectors as soon as possible.
Premier Li voiced confidence in China’s economic resilience, stating that the country’s macro policies have accounted for various uncertainties and have sufficient tools to counter unfavorable external influences. He reiterated China’s commitment to expanding openness, strengthening global cooperation, and sharing development opportunities.
President von der Leyen affirmed the EU’s strong emphasis on its relationship with China, stressing the importance of maintaining continuity and stability amid current global challenges. She expressed anticipation for upcoming meetings between European and Chinese leaders and jointly celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Von der Leyen warned that additional U.S. tariffs have seriously impacted international trade, causing significant repercussions for Europe, China, and vulnerable countries. She called on Europe and China to commit to safeguarding a fair and free multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO), maintaining healthy and stable global economic and trade relations in the common interest of all parties.
