China and IAEA Strengthen Nuclear Cooperation for Global South

China and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed key agreements to enhance nuclear cooperation, aiming to support sustainable development across the Global South.

On Wednesday, the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the IAEA outlined a five-year roadmap for expanded collaboration. Under these agreements, both parties will focus on joint efforts in critical areas such as nuclear security, agriculture, healthcare, environmental protection, and basic nuclear scientific research.

China plans to leverage its advanced nuclear research institutes and universities to train professionals from developing countries, fostering global governance and talent exchange in the nuclear field. This initiative is set to bolster the peaceful use of nuclear technology, benefiting nations throughout the Global South.

Shan Zhongde, director of the CAEA, emphasized China’s commitment to working with the IAEA. “We aim to promote a more equitable, inclusive, and orderly development of nuclear energy,” he said. “Together, we can contribute more to the sustainable use of nuclear technology for the greater good.”

Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the IAEA, praised China’s achievements in nuclear energy development and applications. “China plays a significant role in advancing global nuclear governance,” he remarked. “The IAEA is ready to deepen cooperation with China and jointly work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

This strengthened partnership marks a significant step forward in international nuclear collaboration, promising advancements that could have a profound impact on sustainable development efforts worldwide.
