Chinese Premier Li Qiang: U.S. Tariffs Harm Global Trade and Economy

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has criticized the U.S. tariffs, stating they severely undermine international trade and have a significant negative impact on the global economy. Premier Li made these remarks during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing on Friday.

Emphasizing China’s preparedness, Premier Li said that the country’s macroeconomic policies account for various uncertainties. He expressed confidence in China’s ample policy tools and its ability to maintain sustained and healthy economic development.

China is eager to enhance communication and coordination with Spain and the European Union (EU), aiming to promote open cooperation and oppose unilateralism and protectionism. Premier Li called for safeguarding the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization and ensuring the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

He expressed hope that Spain would play a positive role in fostering cooperation between China and Europe. Highlighting the steady progress in China-Spain relations across various fields, Premier Li underscored that mutual respect and mutual benefit are the correct approaches to international relations.

Amid the complex international situation, China is willing to work with Spain to uphold an open and pragmatic approach, aiming to elevate comprehensive cooperation between the two countries to new heights. Premier Li mentioned strengthening the synergy of development strategies, leveraging complementary industrial advantages, and tapping into the potential of trade and investment cooperation for higher-level win-win results.

He added that China is open to importing more products from Spain and supports deeper cooperation between enterprises in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and new energy. Premier Li also emphasized expanding collaboration in green development, culture, education, youth, science and technology, and tourism to solidify public support for friendly bilateral relations.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez noted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership. He expressed Spain’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with China, abide by the one-China principle, and consolidate political mutual trust.

Prime Minister Sanchez stated that Spain is keen to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in economy, trade, agriculture, and the green economy, and to enhance mutual learning in culture, education, science and technology. He welcomed Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in Spain and supported resolving differences between Europe and China through dialogue and negotiation to further develop Europe-China relations.

Commenting on the U.S. tariffs, Prime Minister Sanchez mentioned that they are neither fair nor just, causing harm to the EU’s economy. He stressed that the EU would strengthen solidarity and cooperation to safeguard its own interests.
