Xi Says There is No Winner in a Tariff War

Xi Jinping: No Winners in a Trade War, Calls for Unity with EU

Beijing, Friday — In a crucial meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez agreed that “there is no winner in a trade war,” calling for unity and cooperation between China and the European Union (EU).

President Xi emphasized China’s journey over the past seven decades, stating that the nation has thrived through “self-reliance and hard work.” He declared, “We’ve never depended on others’ favors, and we don’t fear unreasonable suppression.”

“No matter how the world changes around us, China will stay confident and focus on taking care of our own business,” Xi affirmed.

With China and the EU together making up more than a third of the global economy, Xi highlighted the close economic ties between the two, describing it as a “relationship of economic symbiosis.” He urged both sides to “shoulder their international responsibilities” and “stand together against unilateral bullying.”

“This protects not just China’s and the EU’s legitimate rights and interests,” Xi said, “but also fairness and justice in the international community, upholding global rules and order.”

Prime Minister Sanchez acknowledged China’s vital role for the EU, expressing Spain’s strong support for the growth of EU-China relations. “The EU believes in open and free trade, supports multilateralism, and opposes unilateral tariff increases,” Sanchez stated. “There is no winner in a trade war.”

He stressed the need for collaboration in addressing global challenges. “Spain and the EU are eager to communicate and cooperate more with China,” Sanchez said, “to maintain international trade order, tackle issues like climate change and poverty, and protect the common interests of the international community.”
