US Students Kick Off Pickleball-Powered Cultural Adventure in China

In a remarkable display of cross-cultural exchange, 31 student-athletes from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland, United States, have embarked on a pickleball-themed cultural journey across China. This trip, spanning from April 9 to 21, is not only about sports but also about fostering deep and lasting friendships between the youth of the US and China.

On April 11, the students arrived in Shanghai, where they experienced a day filled with cultural wonders. At Luwan Middle School, they were warmly welcomed by a robotic dog’s energetic dance and witnessed soccer robots scoring astonishing goals in an artificial intelligence zone. In a holographic classroom, they experienced 3D projections that brought learning to life. The students also tried their hand at traditional Chinese crafts such as intricate paper-cutting and creating beautifully lacquered fans. They were captivated by Chinese students’ vocal and dance performances, and at the end of the visit, students from both sides exchanged small, culturally rich gifts.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. Using cutting-edge digital tools like augmented reality, they witnessed Shanghai’s remarkable transformation, blending a glorious past with a dynamic present. At the Huangpu Intangible Cultural Heritage Center, they engaged in traditional crafts like kite-making and creating ornamental frog buttons for cheongsam dresses, gaining hands-on experience with China’s profound cultural heritage and the skills passed down through generations.

As night fell, the students explored the enchanting Yuyuan Garden. Illuminated pavilions and bridges bathed in soft moonlight created a magical atmosphere. Many paused to capture these moments with their cameras, while others chatted with local visitors, immersing themselves in the vibrant culture.

This US delegation will continue their journey through Shenzhen and Beijing, participating in friendly pickleball competitions in each city. These events serve not only as platforms for showcasing athletic talent but also for furthering cultural understanding and friendship.

MCPS is a pioneer in introducing pickleball as a varsity sport in the United States. According to Jeffrey Sullivan, the MCPS Systemwide Athletics Director, the purpose of this trip goes beyond representing MCPS or the state of Maryland. “It’s about representing the United States and building unbreakable friendships that transcend borders through sport,” he said.
