China is making shopping more rewarding for foreign tourists by expanding its instant tax refund policy nationwide. Previously available only in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the service now allows international visitors to receive tax refunds immediately after making purchases across the country.
Under the new rules issued by the State Taxation Administration (STA), overseas shoppers can get their refunds on the spot at designated stores after completing a simple credit card pre-authorization. No more waiting until departure to claim your refund! Upon leaving China, customs will verify your identity and purchases, and the pre-authorization is lifted once everything checks out.
“I was amazed at how quick and easy the process was,” said Irina, a tourist who received her refund in about five minutes. “The refund goes directly into my account. It’s really convenient!”
Foreign visitors staying in China for up to 183 days and departing within 17 days can take advantage of this service. Purchases must be between 500 yuan (approximately $58) and 50,000 yuan from the same tax refund shop on the same day. In some malls, tourists can even skip filling out forms—simply present your passport, and the system retrieves your shopping details automatically.
“I frequently travel to China for business, and this new policy is fantastic,” said Marck, a Turkish traveler. “Getting an 11% VAT refund instantly makes shopping here even better.”
With over 120 tax-refund stores in provinces like Zhejiang alone, China is keen to boost inbound tourism consumption. The STA reported significant increases in the number of overseas tourists applying for tax refunds, sales of tax-refundable goods, and total refund amounts compared to the previous year.
The Chinese authorities are committed to enhancing the shopping experience for tourists by upgrading systems, streamlining processes, and encouraging more overseas visitors to spend in China.
