China has called on the United States to abandon its approach of maximum pressure regarding tariffs, urging for dialogue to resolve trade issues. The appeal came after the U.S. announced exemptions for certain electronic products from its reciprocal tariffs.
Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Monday that there are no winners in a tariff war. “Protectionism leads nowhere, and the U.S. abuse of tariffs is harmful to others and to itself,” Lin stated.
“We urge the U.S. to abandon its wrong approach of maximum pressure and resolve issues through dialogue on an equal footing and in a mutually respectful and beneficial way,” he added.
The comments were made in response to questions about the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s recent guidance issued late Friday. The U.S. government has exempted smartphones, computers, and other electronic products from its reciprocal tariffs. The exemption applies to electronic products entering the United States after April 5, and tariffs already paid can be refunded upon request.
China’s call for dialogue highlights the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries. The Chinese mainland emphasizes the importance of mutual respect and equality in resolving such issues.
