Thousands of revelers gathered in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, on Tuesday to celebrate the annual Water Splashing Festival, marking the New Year of the Dai ethnic group.
The festivities kicked off with a vibrant ceremony near the Lancang River, where auspicious water was collected and carried to the city square. Participants then joyfully splashed water on each other, symbolizing blessings and good fortune for the coming year.
“This is my favorite time of the year,” said Li Mei, a local resident. “It’s a time to wash away the old and welcome new beginnings with friends and family.”
Beyond the water splashing, the festival featured a variety of traditional activities, including worshipping and bathing the Buddha, flying Kongming lanterns, and cultural performances showcasing the rich heritage of the Dai people.
The Water Splashing Festival not only serves as a significant cultural tradition for the Dai community but also attracts tourists from around the world eager to partake in the unique and immersive experience.
“Being here and celebrating with the locals is truly unforgettable,” remarked Juan, a tourist from Argentina. “The energy and happiness are contagious.”
