China Says Us Tariff Hikes No Longer Make Economic Sense

China Criticizes U.S. Tariff Hikes as Economically Meaningless

Beijing, China — China’s Foreign Ministry has criticized the United States’ recent decision to impose a 245% tariff on certain Chinese products, stating that the move “no longer makes economic sense.”

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to the White House’s announcement from April 15, which detailed the tariff increases under Section 232. The U.S. claims the hefty tariffs are a response to China’s retaliatory actions.

“The United States’ extortionate tariff hikes have turned into a numbers game that holds little economic significance,” the spokesperson said. “It only further demonstrates how the U.S. weaponizes tariffs to coerce and bully others.”

The spokesperson emphasized that China does not seek trade conflicts but is prepared to stand its ground. “Trade wars have no winners. While we do not want to engage in these wars, we are not afraid of them,” they said.

“If the United States continues this numbers game with tariffs, it will simply be ignored,” the spokesperson added. “However, if the U.S. inflicts actual damage on China’s rights and interests, China will respond with resolute countermeasures and stand firm to the end.”

The escalating trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies have raised concerns globally, especially among developing nations that rely on stable international trade relations.
