Commerce Ministry Maintains Working level Communication with Us Side

China Urges US to Drop Tariffs and Return to Dialogue

China’s Ministry of Commerce has confirmed ongoing communication with the United States amid escalating trade tensions. Spokesperson He Yongqian stated at a recent press briefing that China remains open to economic and trade consultations with the U.S., emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and equal dialogue.

“Our position has always been consistent—we are willing to engage in discussions to resolve trade issues. The unilateral imposition of tariffs was initiated by the U.S., and we believe they should take steps to correct this approach,” He said.

Citing an old Chinese saying, “It is the doer of the deed who must undo it,” He urged the U.S. to cease its maximum pressure tactics and resolve differences through dialogue.

The trade war intensified after the U.S. raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125 percent. In response, China announced on April 11 that it would match the tariff increase on U.S. products and indicated it would disregard any further U.S. tariff hikes, deeming them economically senseless.

The U.S. has subsequently imposed tariffs of up to 245 percent on certain Chinese goods. China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized this move, accusing the U.S. of turning tariffs into a “meaningless game” and weaponizing them to an irrational extent.

As tensions escalate, both sides face increasing pressure to find a resolution. Observers hope that continued communication at the working level might pave the way for renewed negotiations and a de-escalation of the trade dispute.
