China’s Ambassador to the US Opposes Trade Wars, Calls for Global Unity
China’s Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has declared that China firmly opposes any form of tariff or trade wars, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to tackle economic challenges.
Speaking at the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Culture Open Day on Saturday, Ambassador Xie drew parallels between the principles of TCM and the approach needed to address global economic issues. He cited an ancient Chinese saying: “The greatest physicians save a country, and the second greatest save individuals,” highlighting the importance of working for the common good.
“China firmly opposes tariff wars or trade wars of any form,” Xie stated. “This is not only to safeguard our own national interests and dignity but also to champion the international economic and trade order, fairness, and justice.”
He emphasized that TCM’s focus on addressing both symptoms and root causes offers valuable insights. “To treat a disease, it’s crucial to identify its root cause, face the problem squarely, and take the right medicine,” he explained. “Similarly, rather than fighting over existing turf, a wiser solution is to make the pie bigger from a long-term perspective.”
Ambassador Xie stressed that globalization, connectivity, and complementary advantages have been the foundation of global prosperity for decades. “Weaponizing interdependence would only cause self-isolation and backfire,” he warned. “Tariff barriers would clog the flow of international trade and harm the health of the world economy.”
Highlighting China’s economic resilience, Xie noted that despite global uncertainties, events like the China International Consumer Products Expo and the Canton Fair saw record participation. In the first quarter, China’s GDP grew by 5.4% year-on-year, ranking among the top in major economies.
“China remains a huge market with tremendous potential, a major engine of global growth, and an ideal destination for foreign investment,” he asserted. “We will continue to open rather than close our doors, tear down rather than erect barriers, and bring more stability and certainty to the world with our high-quality development and high-standard opening up.”
Ambassador Xie’s message underscores China’s commitment to collaboration and its role in fostering a robust global economy.
