China has called on the Philippines to reconsider its upcoming joint military exercises with the United States, cautioning against actions that could escalate regional tensions. At a regular press briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged the Philippines to avoid “playing with fire” ahead of the drills scheduled from April 21 to May 9 across multiple locations in the Philippines.
Guo highlighted the current global climate, emphasizing that unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemonic practices are impacting the international community. He noted that nations in the region are keen to promote unity and cooperation, maintain regional stability, and address shared challenges collectively.
“In this context, the Philippines conducting military exercises with external forces undermines regional stability and development,” Guo stated. He added that the introduction and deployment of strategic and tactical weapons could position the Philippines in opposition to neighboring countries, leading to widespread concern and opposition.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that a U.S. missile system is being deployed in the waters between China’s Taiwan region and the Philippines. Guo reaffirmed China’s position on the Taiwan question, describing it as a purely internal affair and central to China’s core interests.
“China firmly opposes any country using the Taiwan question as a pretext to enhance military deployment in the region, provoke tensions, and undermine regional peace and stability,” the spokesperson said. “We urge the parties concerned to refrain from provocation on this matter.”
Guo concluded with a warning: “Those who play with fire will perish by it.”
