Shanghai, China — In a thrilling finish at the Enhance Anting Golf Club, China’s own Wu Ashun surged to victory at the Volvo China Open on Sunday, capturing his second national championship title a decade after his first win. The 39-year-old golfer delivered a stellar performance, carding a six-under 65 to finish at 14-under 270, edging out England’s Jordan Smith by just one stroke.
Wu started the day four shots behind the leaders but quickly made his move with a birdie on the first hole. Despite a bogey on the fifth, he regained momentum with a birdie on the eighth, making the turn at one-under. The back nine saw Wu in top form, sinking five birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th, and a crucial one on the 17th hole from a greenside bunker. This decisive birdie gave him a two-shot lead heading into the final hole.
“On the back nine, I felt I had more chances to make birdies,” Wu said after his victory. “I stayed patient, kept going, and never gave up. Making five birdies on the back nine was wonderful. Playing at home in Shanghai brings me luck.”
Smith, who had been leading alongside Wu during the final holes, finished with a 67 to take second place. Germany’s Yannik Paul secured third with a 69, while China’s Li Haotong, the overnight co-leader, struggled early and finished tied for fourth after a one-over 72.
Wu’s victory not only earned him a prize of $433,500 but also positioned him tied for third on the DP World Tour’s Asian Swing. With the Hainan Classic approaching, Wu is in contention for a spot at the prestigious PGA Championship at Quail Hollow next month.
“It was an incredible week with incredible fans,” Wu added. “I feel pretty relaxed because I’m playing at home. Shanghai is my home, and it’s a lovely golf course.”
The excitement continues as players gear up for the Hainan Classic, where the top three performers will secure their places in one of golf’s most significant events. All eyes will be on Wu Ashun to see if he can maintain his remarkable form.
