China and UK Vow to Uphold Post-WWII International Order in High-Level Talks

In a recent phone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy pledged to uphold the international order established after World War II, emphasizing their shared responsibility in maintaining global stability.

Wang Yi highlighted the importance of the United Nations-centered international system and the multilateral trading system, especially amid rising unilateral actions that threaten global cooperation. He noted that both China and Britain have a duty to protect these systems to ensure a fair and just international environment.

Since the beginning of the year, China and Britain have successfully held dialogues on economics, finance, strategy, and energy. Preparations are underway for further collaborations in artificial intelligence, science and technology, climate change, education, and trade. Wang Yi expressed hope that both nations can overcome disruptions and focus on mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wang Yi also criticized the use of tariffs as a weapon in international trade, stating that such actions violate World Trade Organization rules and push international relations back to the “law of the jungle.” He emphasized China’s commitment to defending its legitimate rights and upholding international rules.

David Lammy echoed these sentiments, expressing Britain’s appreciation for the positive momentum in bilateral relations. He affirmed Britain’s readiness to enhance exchanges at all levels and engage in regular dialogues on issues of mutual concern. Lammy emphasized Britain’s commitment to free trade and the multilateral trading system, recognizing the significant responsibilities both nations bear as permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The two leaders also discussed other global issues, including the Ukraine crisis, agreeing to maintain communication and work together in addressing common challenges.
