Beijing, China — In a landmark meeting on Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between their countries. This pivotal alliance aims to enhance cooperation across various sectors and usher in a new era of bilateral relations.
President Xi emphasized the importance of strengthening political mutual trust and deepening practical collaboration. He affirmed China’s support for Azerbaijan in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, while pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions.
The leaders highlighted the need to align development strategies and promote high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. They expressed a mutual commitment to expand partnerships in education, culture, tourism, and youth exchanges, fostering closer ties between their peoples.
Addressing global challenges, President Xi called for intensified efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism through in-depth law enforcement and security cooperation. He warned that tariff and trade wars harm the legitimate rights and interests of all countries and disrupt the global economic order.
President Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s adherence to the one-China principle, acknowledging Taiwan as an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and expressed support for China’s efforts toward national reunification. He praised President Xi’s vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the global initiatives conducive to world peace, stability, and prosperity.
“Azerbaijan highly appreciates and actively supports these initiatives,” Aliyev stated. “We are ready to work with China to deepen our comprehensive strategic partnership, expanding cooperation in the digital economy, green energy, science and technology, and more.”
Following their discussions, the presidents signed a joint statement to formalize the comprehensive strategic partnership. They also witnessed the signing of 20 agreements covering cooperation in areas such as justice, green development, intellectual property rights, and aerospace.
The day’s events included a warm welcome ceremony hosted by President Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for President Aliyev and his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, at the Great Hall of the People, symbolizing the growing friendship between the two nations.
