Renowned art director Huo Tingxiao has called on the film industry to embrace artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT and AIGC, saying they are revolutionizing concept design in movies. Speaking at the Motion Picture Association Film Workshop during the 15th Beijing International Film Festival on Monday, Huo shared his insights on how AI is transforming the creative workflow for concept artists.
As vice chairman of the China Film Association and president of the China Film Art Direction Academy, Huo is at the forefront of cinematic innovation. He discussed the evolving relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence, emphasizing that while AI offers new tools and efficiencies, the essence of art remains a human endeavor.
“We should embrace new technologies like ChatGPT and AIGC,” Huo said. “But it’s important to remember that AI will remain a tool. Art fundamentally demands human creation.”
Huo highlighted how AI can assist artists in generating ideas and visualizing concepts more quickly, but he cautioned against relying solely on technology. He believes that the unique perspectives and emotions that artists bring to their work cannot be replicated by machines.
“The future of film lies in the synergy between human creativity and artificial intelligence,” he explained. “By combining our strengths with AI capabilities, we can push the boundaries of storytelling and visual expression.”
Teenage and young adult audiences might soon witness films that blend cutting-edge AI technology with human imagination, offering fresh and immersive cinematic experiences.
