China’s Ministry of Education has introduced 29 new majors to higher education institutions, aiming to meet evolving national strategies and foster high-quality development. Among these, programs like International Cruise Management, Aviation Sports, and Digital Drama are set to invigorate the cultural and tourism industries.
International Cruise Management
This new major aligns with the recovery of the global cruise industry. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, global cruise passenger numbers reached 31.5 million in 2023 and are projected to grow to 39.5 million by 2027. Reflecting this trend, China’s cruise economy has seen significant growth this year. Professor Ye Xinliang from Shanghai University of Engineering Science noted that within three months of full resumption, China recorded 180,000 cruise passengers and over 100 cruise ship port calls.
The introduction of this major is timely, preparing graduates for roles in cruise operations, port management, and duty-free retail. This will enhance the international competitiveness of China’s cruise industry and stimulate economic growth in coastal tourism hubs.
Aviation Sports
The Aviation Sports major responds to the burgeoning low-altitude economy and aviation tourism. Regions like Anyang in Henan Province have already invested in aviation sports resources, creating high-quality tourism routes. Graduates will contribute to aviation sightseeing, flight experiences, and educational tourism programs, promoting wider public access to aviation tourism.
Digital Drama
As one of the most forward-looking additions, the Digital Drama major represents the fusion of technology and the arts. Utilizing AR, VR, and virtual engines, digital drama offers innovative cultural tourism products and immersive experiences. Projects like China’s first panoramic immersive theater theme park in Zhengzhou have transformed traditional stage plays into interactive tourism attractions. The program will train interdisciplinary talents in technology and the arts, advancing the digitization and immersive presentation of cultural content.
