At the recent Beijing International Film Festival, Saudi Arabian production designer Ahmed Baageel was on a mission. Eager to foster film collaborations between Saudi Arabia and China, Baageel attended the screening of the Saudi film “Norah,” where he was delighted to meet students studying the Arabic language.
“For me, cinema is more than entertainment—it’s a bridge between cultures,” Baageel said. “Seeing Chinese students learning Arabic at the screening filled me with hope for greater understanding between our peoples.”
Baageel expressed his enthusiasm for Chinese cinema and shared his desire to watch Chinese films at home as a way to learn Mandarin. “Chinese films offer a window into the culture and language,” he noted. “I believe that through film, we can bring our nations closer together.”
The production designer’s visit to Beijing underscores the growing interest in cultural exchange between Saudi Arabia and China. As both countries expand their film industries, opportunities for collaboration continue to rise.
“There’s so much we can learn from each other,” Baageel added. “I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for Sino-Saudi film projects.”
