Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s steadfast commitment to global climate goals, emphasizing that the nation will not slow down its climate actions or reduce support for international cooperation.
Speaking via video link at the leaders meeting on climate and just transition on Wednesday, Xi highlighted that despite global uncertainties, China remains dedicated to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
“However the world may change, China will not slow down its climate actions, will not reduce its support for international cooperation, and will not cease its efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind,” Xi stated.
He noted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Facing rapid global changes, Xi urged for strengthened solidarity and cooperation to advance global climate governance and development.
“As long as we have firm confidence and strengthen solidarity and cooperation, we will certainly be able to combat countercurrents and secure steady and sustained progress in the cause of global climate governance and development,” he said.
Xi called for safeguarding multilateralism, upholding international law, and promoting international justice. He emphasized the need for deepening international cooperation, particularly through South-South cooperation, and pledged that China will continue to assist other developing countries.
Addressing the importance of a just transition, Xi urged countries to put people at the center, integrating objectives like environmental protection, economic development, job creation, and poverty eradication.
He highlighted the obligations of developed countries to provide assistance and support to developing nations to facilitate a global green and low-carbon transition.
Xi announced that China will unveil its 2035 nationally determined contributions before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belem, Brazil, covering all economic sectors and greenhouse gases.
“China is a firm campaigner and important contributor to the world’s green development,” Xi said, noting that China has built the world’s largest renewable energy system and contributed significantly to global green efforts since announcing its carbon goals five years ago.
“China is ready to work with all parties to effectively fulfill their common but differentiated responsibilities to promote the building of a clean, beautiful, and sustainable world,” he added.
