2025 Shanghai Auto Show Unveils Future of Low-Carbon Mobility

The 2025 Shanghai Auto Show has kicked off with a dazzling display of innovative vehicles and cutting-edge technology, all centered around low-carbon and intelligent mobility solutions. Opening on Wednesday in the vibrant metropolis of Shanghai, the 10-day event is the largest in its history, featuring nearly 1,000 renowned automakers and supply chain enterprises from 26 countries and regions.

Over 1,300 vehicles are on display, with new energy vehicles (NEVs) accounting for over 70 percent of the total—a clear sign of the industry’s shift toward sustainability. More than 100 new vehicles are making their debut, captivating audiences with the latest in automotive advancements.

“Overseas dealers from more than 100 countries and regions have traveled to Shanghai to attend the event,” said Gu Chunting, vice chairman of the Council for the Promotion of International Trade Shanghai (CCPIT Shanghai), one of the organizers. “This year’s show not only highlights the achievements in the NEV sector but also fosters international cooperation.”

A highlight of this year’s show is the inaugural Automotive Technology and Supply Chain Pavilion, showcasing state-of-the-art innovations across the entire industry chain. Nearly 50 prominent domestic and international companies in technology, semiconductors, and chips are making their debut, emphasizing the critical role of technology in the future of mobility.

Major announcements from leading automakers have added to the excitement. Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation has signed an agreement to establish a wholly owned electric vehicle plant in Shanghai. With an investment of 14.6 billion yuan (about $2 billion), the project focuses on the research and development, production, and sales of Lexus electric vehicles and EV batteries.

“We look forward to working with more local suppliers to showcase the competitive strengths of China’s new energy vehicle industry chain to the world,” said Tatsuro Ueda, chief executive officer of China Region and chairman of Toyota Motor (China) Investment. “Together, we can promote the global reach of Chinese technology.”

Volkswagen, with a presence in the Chinese market spanning over 40 years, is showcasing more than 50 models. The company plans to launch over 30 new models specifically for the Chinese market in the next three years.

“The China market is very conducive to technology,” said Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen China Passenger Cars Brand. “We are deeply entrenched in the market, we have a lot of local knowledge, and we can really scale this and bring it back also to our global business.”

In the battery sector, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) unveiled its latest dual-core structure technology. This innovation divides a single battery into two independent energy zones, each using different materials to maximize performance.

Running through May 2, the auto show also features intelligent connectivity technology, safety and vehicle security systems, and automotive financial services, offering a comprehensive look at the future of mobility.
