China’s Nuclear Power Units Achieve Top Global Safety Performance
China’s nuclear power units have maintained outstanding safety records, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Officials announced on Wednesday that the Chinese mainland now operates 102 nuclear power units, with 58 of them holding operating licenses. This makes China the global leader in nuclear power scale, boasting a total installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts.
Hou Yingdong, an official from the ministry, highlighted that these nuclear power units have operated safely for over 600 reactor years—a term used to describe one reactor operating for a full year. “China’s nuclear power operation safety performance continues to rank among the best in the world,” Hou stated, referencing the latest index from the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
Addressing concerns about natural disasters, Hou assured that all nuclear power plant sites in China are strategically located away from earthquake-prone areas. He emphasized that the facilities are designed to withstand extreme natural events, including heavy rains, floods, and tsunamis. “The safety of the nuclear power plants is guaranteed in the face of extreme natural disasters,” he affirmed.
Li Zhiguo, another official from the ministry, revealed that China has established the world’s largest radiation environment quality monitoring network. “The radiation levels around nuclear facilities have remained stable and safe over the years,” Li noted at the press conference.
As China continues to expand its nuclear power capabilities, these assurances of safety and environmental monitoring play a crucial role in fostering public confidence and promoting sustainable energy development.
