In a significant crackdown on cross-border crime, Myanmar has handed over more than 920 Chinese telecom fraud suspects to Chinese authorities, China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on Wednesday.
The suspects were transferred via the port of Daluo in southwest China’s Yunnan Province following a series of intensive operations by Myanmar law enforcement since March 24. The joint efforts mark the latest achievement in the ongoing cooperation between China and Myanmar to combat telecom fraud.
Last November, law enforcement agencies from both countries dismantled large-scale telecom fraud centers near the China-Myanmar border in northern Myanmar. Despite these efforts, some suspects had relocated deeper into Myanmar to evade arrest, continuing to target Chinese citizens.
Chinese authorities intensified their investigative efforts, providing crucial intelligence to their Myanmar counterparts. This collaboration led to the identification of new telecom fraud dens and the recent capture of the suspects, according to the MPS.
The ministry emphasized its commitment to maintaining relentless pressure on cross-border telecom fraud, working closely with Myanmar to protect citizens from scams. It also urged individuals involved in telecom and online fraud to abandon any illusions of impunity and to return to China voluntarily to seek leniency.
