China Supports Diplomatic Efforts on Iran Nuclear Issue, Backs IAEA Role

China has voiced its strong support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in promoting a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue. On Thursday, Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the IAEA, emphasized the importance of political and diplomatic engagement during a joint meeting in Vienna.

The meeting, which included IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Russian envoy Mikhail Ulyanov, and Iranian envoy Reza Najafi, highlighted the shared belief that mutual respect is essential for progress. China, Russia, and Iran agreed that the IAEA has the expertise to contribute constructively to resolving the issue.

“We believe that diplomatic efforts are the only viable and practical path forward,” Li said. “China appreciates Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and respects its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy.”

China and Russia expressed support for Iran in strengthening its dialogue with the IAEA. Li added that China encourages Iran to hold discussions with all parties, including the United States, to safeguard its legitimate rights through consultation and negotiation.

“China is willing to further enhance communication and cooperation with Russia, Iran, and the IAEA to inject positive momentum into diplomatic efforts,” Li stated.

The meeting comes ahead of the third round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, scheduled to take place in Muscat, Oman, on Saturday. The discussions aim to address Tehran’s nuclear program and the removal of U.S. sanctions.
