fengyun Space Operational System for Space Weather Released

China Unveils ‘FengYun Space’ System to Boost Space Weather Forecasting

China has taken a significant leap in space weather forecasting by unveiling “FengYun Space,” an advanced operational system designed to enhance monitoring and early warning capabilities for space weather events. Launched by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) during the 2025 China Space Day event in Shanghai, this system promises to bolster China’s position in space exploration and safety.

Developed by the National Satellite Meteorological Center, FengYun Space is a comprehensive platform that integrates data processing, storage, analysis applications, and display functionalities. By bringing together an impressive array of monitoring and forecast products—66 basic monitoring products, 234 forecast products, 156 service products, and over 600 information products—the system offers unparalleled insight into space weather dynamics.

“The FengYun Space system has proven effective in operational running,” the CMA stated, highlighting its ability to conduct systematic forecasts for solar activity, interplanetary space, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. These forecasts span various time frames, from real-time updates to long-term projections.

The impact of FengYun Space extends across multiple sectors, demonstrating application capabilities in aviation, aerospace, communications, navigation, energy, and power industries. During critical space weather events, such as the super geomagnetic storm outbreak in April, the system achieved “zero-delay” responses. It automatically generated and distributed service products to users, showcasing its robust forecasting and early warning capabilities.

Furthermore, FengYun Space provides vital support for weather forecasting for space missions like the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft, which was launched into space on Thursday. By ensuring stable operations and the safety of astronauts, the system plays a crucial role in China’s ongoing space endeavors.

With the launch of FengYun Space, China continues to advance its technological prowess in space weather monitoring. This innovative system not only enhances the nation’s space exploration efforts but also contributes to global understanding and preparedness for space weather phenomena.
