The first World Athletics Diamond League meeting of 2025 is set to launch this Saturday in Xiamen, located in southeast China’s Fujian Province. Sixteen homegrown athletes, including celebrated triple jumper Zhu Yaming, are gearing up to compete in ten events, aiming to impress on their home turf.
Although the men’s triple jump isn’t a Diamond League points event in Xiamen, Zhu Yaming is taking the competition seriously. Last month, at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, the 30-year-old secured a hard-earned silver medal, marking a significant comeback after a two-year slump.
This event will be Zhu’s first appearance since his indoor success, and he’s set to face fellow Chinese athlete Su Wen and Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso, the reigning World Champion from Budapest.
Zhu has an impressive track record, having claimed silver at the Tokyo Olympics and bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon. His recent reunion with Brazilian coach Nelio Moura has sparked a revival in his performance, and he’s now aiming for more glory at this year’s Tokyo World Championships and the National Games of China.
“I really enjoy coming to Xiamen to compete in the Diamond League,” Zhu shared. “I’ve made some adjustments during training, but I’m not in my best form yet, so I need some time to recover. However, when it comes to the real competition, I will give it my all. I believe that to finish in the top three, a mark of at least 17.30 meters will be necessary. My years of experience in major competitions have been a great help, and I’m eager to maintain the strong momentum from the indoor season and keep achieving better results.”
As the excitement builds, Zhu and his fellow athletes are poised to showcase their talents in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, adding extra thrill to the Diamond League’s opening event.
